Lana Del Rey references a Harry Nilsson song near the end of “Did You Know” She says “Don’t Forget Me” from Pussy Cats breaks at 2:05. You’ll hear the frayed note and raw emotion that send him off the rails if you play it.

Compared to her early work, Lana now focuses on small, incidental moments. “Ocean Blvd” is a slow, dreamy ballad filled with them: her deep inhale and exhale over the string sweeps in the intro, the layered, mumbled delivery at the end of the third verse, the way each chorus grows increasingly grandiose and communal, leading to a slow-motion finale of guest vocalists as Lana disappears from the frame.

Lana has developed a distinct set of images and references over the past decade. She sings “Fuck me to death/Love me until I love myself” in each chorus of her ninth album’s title track.

The mosaic-ceilinged tunnel she sings about is less a geographic focal point than a window into the potential she sees in familiar scenes and well-traveled routes. She says everyday magic exists. Listen first.
